Republican Confederacy
Right after the election, I wrote that the Republican Party was becoming a marginalized group of white southerners. The new poll about who thinks President Obama is not an American Citizen reinforces the notion that the Limbaugh/Beck/Palinistas are living in an alternative universe with their own media and their own reality.
In studying the history of the late 1860′s I would come across reports of “Johnny Reb” guerrilla soldiers who had some how never gotten the word that the Civil War was over and their side had lost. To a man they would chant “The South shall rise again!”
Richard Hofstadter in a seminal article published in 1964 called “The Paranoid Style in America Politics” shows that there is noting new in The Birthers.
But the modern right wing, as Daniel Bell has put it, feels dispossessed: America has been largely taken away from them and their kind, though they are determined to try to repossess it and to prevent the final destructive act of subversion. The old American virtues have already been eaten away by cosmopolitans and intellectuals; the old competitive capitalism has been gradually undermined by socialistic and communistic schemers; the old national security and independence have been destroyed by treasonous plots, having as their most powerful agents not merely outsiders and foreigners as of old but major statesmen who are at the very centers of American power. Their predecessors had discovered conspiracies; the modern radical right finds conspiracy to be betrayal from on high.
From the John Birch Society all the way back to the Ku Klux Klan of 1866, we have had to live with this aspect of America. It’s sad, but I’m afraid there is no avoiding it as long as kooks like Glen Beck have a platform.
They certainly have their own media and reality, how you negotiate with them though… that ALONE will determine whether liberals get anything you want done.

“The U.S. has a genius for producing entrepreneurs who can turn the latest technology into piles of gold. Less than 10% of today’s rich inherited their wealth, for example, and many are “instapreneurs,” transformed in an instant from penury to prosperity. The country also has a genius for turning those fortunes into philanthropic empires. Bill Gates, now in league with Warren Buffett, often echoes Rockefeller’s calls for “damming up the causes of poverty” by applying the latest business methods to charity.
The recent financial crisis and government bailout have naturally produced a backlash against the rich. But history suggests that it will have only a limited effect—and that any politician who takes populism too far will eventually pay dearly, as both John Edwards and Mike Huckabee did last year in their presidential bids. The American rich have proved themselves to be too creative, too diverse and too adaptable to be vulnerable to the politics of class envy.”

If only the folks at the DailyKos, could come to terms with this… they wouldn’t need to spend their time demeaning the South.
Note both Huckabee and Edwards were SOUTHERN populists.

It gets better, M. Arlo Guthrie is a Republican. No joke. He signed up about five years ago saying that we have enough good Democrats but democracy requires two parties that know what they are doing and one of them is a miserable failure.
Imagine if two hippies walk in and join the Republican Party. Imagine three hippies…. it’s a MOVEMENT.
Weirdly, it might work. Dilute the waters they walk on with old hippies. Evangelicals would flee in droves and having nowhere else to go, they’d become … hmmm… they’d have to march off tall cliffs and join their brothers and sisters in the next world.
The Folkslinger may be onto something.

The thing about Arlo not wanting to pay a union stage hand to carry his guitar on stage is classic…. it’d be even better if it is true. Reminds me of David Mamet.
Eventually Len, the gays & minorities will all wise up to the fact that if you are rich, and still have to vote Dem, you aren’t really equal.

Arlo is definitely his own man from what I read… or Jackie’s but nevermind. The NY Times interview is classic but he said at arlo.net that they chopped the logic out of it. If you ever want to get a glimmer of his thought processes, you should read arlo.net. As online communities go, they are diverse and he has no qualms about engaging and making his point.
If you can write ‘gays and minorities’ without noticing the overlap, you may be parsing your words too carefully. I’m a white southern democrat who’s music hero is white shaggy massachusetts republican. I live for irony and bucking the stereotypes.
Why? It’s the hippie way.

The issue here is that some folks, and they happen to be conservative, just aren’t wired to take up facts that contradict their preconceived ideas. Repeated studies have shown that to be a fact.
I think in this instance, racism is a serious issue as well.

Show me those studies. In my experience rejecting facts is a matter of proving what they are and proof of the nature of a person based on a label you apply to them is only proof in your own head. Caveat emptor.
Racism is an issue. Follow the 90/10 principle: 10 percent of what happens to you is out of your control. 90 is determined by how you react to 10.
Racism is in everyone. It is fear of other. No one gets over it. They react to save themselves the trouble of the 90 of bullshit that will follow.
Until you get the point that ten percent is endurable, you try to live other people’s lives, control their emotions, change their decisions, and as Mal says in Serenity, mess.
Ten percent is chump change.

Is racism an “issue,” or a “behavior?”
I personally am offended to be called “white–” in the summer my skin (everyone’s largest organ) is a kind of tannish-pinkish-yellowish-creamish, shading more towards the pallid side as the air gets colder, like my daughter with her English-aristocracy peaches-and-cream — by someone who is proud to call him or herself “black,” which actually comes in shades from the lightest coffee-with-a-lot-of-cream to my son-in-law from Ghana whose skin is a deep navy-ebony with hints of gold and copper and brown and red.
I know, don’t confuse people with subtlety and complexity. Everything is so much simpler in black and white, and it’s so much easier to develop some High Dudgeon and Afronted Offense in that monochrome world.

Studies? I don’t need studies. I have eyes and ears.
Compare and contrast Goober, such a terrific exemplar of the redneck-right, and Obama.
Goober can be summed as: “Jesus tells me what to do. I don’t need facts. I know I’m right. I can see into other people’s souls.”
(Cheney can be summed up as “Go fuck yourself.”)
Obama: “Let’s get everybody into a room and talk things out. There’s got to be some place in the middle where we can meet.”
As witnessed by the little play of Crowley and Gates at the beer summit. If that had been Goober, he would not have been able to resist the “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” moment. Obama doesn’t trumpet any kind of accomplishment. He got them to sit down and talk to each other. Period. His version of The Truth doesn’t have to prevail, to triumph, to stand majestically on a mountain-top, or an aircraft carrier, to be adored and cheered by a rapturous throng.
Not all conservative people are batshit insane on all issues. Not all liberal people are sober, thoughtful analysts on all issues.
But there are too many people who can’t keep much more in their heads than SCARY BLACK MUSLIM TERRORIST WILL FORCE MY CHILDREN TO BECOME GAY ABORTIONISTS.
These people aren’t conservative so much as they are brain-damaged.

By the way. I predict that there will be a strong movement by the under-90-IQ crowd to impeach Obama on the grounds that he isn’t a citizen.
And I won’t be at all surprised if the GOP Congressional leadership goes along with it and administers yet another self-inflicted fatal head-wound.

“This narrative sees whites as incorrigible bigots and supremacists. It was once true and it gave blacks great moral power. But it doesn’t work so well in modern America, as the Gates affair makes clear. Handcuffs were Sgt. Crowley’s answer to Mr. Gates’s moral muscling.
But then Skip Gates was tired. What was President Barack Obama’s excuse? Why did he step into the same cultural narrative that Mr. Gates had tried and failed with?
Where race is concerned, I sometimes think of the president as the Peter Sellers character in “Dr. Strangelove.” Sellers plays a closet Nazi whose left arm—quite involuntarily—keeps springing up into the Heil Hitler salute. We see him in his wheelchair, his right arm—the good and decent arm—struggling to keep the Nazi arm down so that no one will know the truth of his inner life. These wrestling matches between the good and bad arms were hysterically funny.
When I saw Mr. Obama—with every escape route available to him—wade right into the Gates affair at the end of his health-care news conference, I knew that his demon arm had momentarily won out over his good arm. It broke completely free—into full salute—in the “acted stupidly” comment that he made in reference to the Cambridge police’s handling of the matter. Here was the implication that whites were such clumsy and incorrigible racists that even the most highly achieved blacks lived in constant peril of racial humiliation. This was a cultural narrative, a politics, and in the end it was a bigotry. It let white Americans see a president who doubted them.”

Last night I got pulled over for something silly. I put both hands on the wheel, and said, “yes sir” to a cop who looked to be 24.
If you want a higher level of service from cops (like being able to yell at them when you are right) we’re gonna have to pay them A LOT more – so we can draw a much more talented and trained group of workers.
I’m ok with saying yes sir, and continuing to pay them what we pay them for what we ask them to do.

Pay is only part of the problem, Morgan. At my last job my customers were police (records management). One learns the reaction is built into the job and the job conditions the cop. We may face that pullover once or twice in a lifetime or whatever. I’ve been rousted. I do know first hand what that is all about. Again, 90/10 rule works for us.
For the cop, it’s a different story. He goes to ALL the pullovers, all the domestic calls, all the grapplings with the big bads that you and I don’t like to admit are out there. He’s paranoid 24 hours a day because there ARE people out to get him (or her). The 90/10 rule is not quite good enough because the 10 can be a bullet. Reacting to that even with a speedy gonzalez liberal brain is still a possible zero-sum.
Conditioning is powerful stuff, but it isn’t all evil sci-fi (excuse me, SyFy) Dr. Horribles. The environment, the context of the gig makes the man unless the man works very very hard to condition themselves to react differently.
Gates knew that. He could have invoked 90/10, “yeah, I guess that looked bad to the old lady who called it in; misunderstanding officer” but instead he mau maued. Crowley could have turned to the other cops and said, “It’s his house and he’s a mouth, but 90/10; take him out of the cuffs and call it in.” but instead he followed the book and called in disorderly conduct.
If Obama didn’t get that, he may indeed not be ‘black enough’ or it may just be he was as unstreetwise as the other two chumps.
But what gets me is how much airtime and talk time we’ll give a chump brush up. It doesn’t go unnoticed by the behaviorists when bait gets the rat to ALWAYS turn left. That is leverage. If you indeed want real freedom in this country, you’ll have to teach yourselves not to take the bait and run the maze so willingly for so little cheese.

If you indeed want real freedom in this country, you’ll have to teach yourselves not to take the bait and run the maze so willingly for so little cheese.

len, you are dead right.
The thing is Gates and so many of his defneders, what they are really saying outright and underneath it all, is “white rich dude yell at cops all the time, and get away with it.” And:
1. most white rich dudes don’t act like that. and neither do I think most black rich dudes. and I know most white and black non-rich dudes dont act like that either.
2. plenty of white rich dudes who act like assholes, get shown who’s boss, and pay thru the nose with a lawyer to fix it. (black rich dude is welcome to do the same).
3. when you find a cop who’s willing, in the face of all the conditioning you suggest, to let some asshole yell at him and keep a cool head because the surrounding circumstances in a moments notice and still let off the asshole – that cop is now a detective, or finished law school, or some other thing.
And I mean it.. if you want the job of “cop” to routinely require them to go from hand next to gun, to apologizing and kissing ass… we’d have to pay double the current rate, to bring that many people to the table for the work.
What’s sick… is the DESIRE to gain success so you can yell at cops, and generally be a dick. And while before we knew there were some white assholes, now we know there are some black ones… which I think is a positive message.
It would a been GREAT if Obana said, “Jesus, everybody’s got an asshole friend. you folks just met mine. He really is a good guy, he’s just got a chip on his shoulder about the whole black history thing, so he sees those ghosts everywhere, even when they aren’t there. Can’t we all just forgive him? And let this be a lesson to all you self important white and black dudes… be polite to the cops, so they can get out of your way, and let you go abut your business, because after this, we’re not gonna put up with you acting to big for your britches.”

It’s not that dire, but in race relations one asks the question, what are the conditions of black life that historical and current racism have created which require redress for disparate impact as Shelby Steele describes? Be clear, in most discussions of racism in America, we are seldom talking about real race relations but black/white relations. Steele makes an interesting case:

I personally think we should have create a “local currency” for the black community.

Peg it to the dollar, but issue 100 units of the currency for 95 US dollars, and allow black businesses to actually advertise directly on the currency for free, “this buck worth two at Simon’s Coffee.”
This would encourage people in general, and liberals in particular to actually go to black owned businesses and do their shopping there. Business owners could show their solidarity with the black community, by giving discounts on their own work… when paid for in this local currency. They get paid in this local currency, and they are slightly limited to wear they can spend it. Its all done by choice, and it is publicly measurable… we can see who takes the currency and who doesn’t.
When 40% of the shoe store owners are black, Nike’s management will reflect it.

The development engine in the black community is the black community investing in itself.
A blind spot in some views is a lack of respect for the tradition of the church in black communities and its overlap with black business.
How many of you do business with majority black owned businesses?

Exactly. Local currency is a VERY public way to encourage such business.
And it requires no government. Imagine that.

Section 8 – Powers of Congress
The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;
To borrow money on the credit of the United States;
To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;
To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization, and uniform Laws on the subject of Bankruptcies throughout the United States;
To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures…
Dude, there’s a lot of shit in that there Constitution. Fuggedabout all the shit that’s in the sessions laws and legislative history (including the post-hoc shit read in by dudes who lost the debate when the law was adopted) and the US Code and Code of Federal Regulations and all the Hidden Law that is how and what the Executive (all those stinkin’ Agencies, except for the ones that do stuff that Profits Me Personally) actually administer and enforces. Or doesn’t.
Like, too bad there’s not some common ideal behind all this shit any more, just people seeking their own interest, convinced that the model for all behaviors is not cooperation and symbiosis but predation and parasitism.
Not that all the high thoughts and inspirations and ideals recorded by people like that slave-holder-and-screwer, “All men are created equal” Thomas Jefferson don’t still provide inspiration for a few, and cover for a lot more who argue that they are just exercising their inalienable rights or Quick! Look over there! while I pick your pocket and make it with your wife and send your kids off to do that thing called war while I make a, pardon the pun, killing on shares of Raytheon and Lockheed-Martin and stuff.
Sounds like another reason for a Balanced Budget Amendment, and Creationism as a matter of National Policy, and Proof-of-Citizenship Amendment, and Sanctity of Marriage Amendment, and a No Government Except The Part That Can Grab Taxes From (Almost)Everyone And Spend It On The Stuff That Benefits Or Titllates Me, and…

Jon,
Do you really liken the “birthers” of today to the lynch mobs who terrorized the South, reversed Reconstruction and imposed the brutal Jim Crow regime? Aren’t you really battling against states’ rights wherever you find that fight? How does a professed New Federalist manage such a thing? We’d wanted a New Federalism and instead we got a federalization of damn near everything. That’s what Southerners are upset about, not the president’s elusive birth certificate. You may try to write off the South, but doing so contradicts your several earlier admissions that the South has played the swing role, for both parties, since ~1964. And bear in mind that Southern Californians were foursquare for the Confederacy when the Civil War broke out, and were only routed, in their attempts to bring the state into line with the CSA, by a glorified bar fight in Sacramento and by Gen. Pico east of Los Angeles.

JTM,
I don’t think you understand local currency. It exists in many towns. It is totally legal. It’s purpose to keep money spent locally.
The idea, which makes tons of sense, is to create a “local” currency with the goal of keeping / moving money into the black community.
What sooooo awesome about it?
1. Black businesses can advertise on it, offer specials, etc.
2. When you trade in $95 US dollars for it, you’d get $100 in the black currency. So you’d have REASON to shop in places that will accept it.
3. Black owned businesses getting free advertising would accept it.
4. Non-black business owners can offer discounts when they are paid in it.
5. It is all done freely. Without any government action.
Besides secondary currencies are healthy.

I’d rather see priorities shift toward business loans, Morgan. I’d rather take a hard look at programs such as magnet schools and see if the goals of integration by school choice actually reduce the real problem of drop rates or are just a way to get the public systems to teach subjects that one can only succeed at with private tutoring and social position to those who can afford both.
Juan Williams takes up the cause of Bill Cosby. What they are saying is that the change it takes is not difficult but it is individual: responsibility to finish school, get a job, if married stay married, see to the children, keep a job, and stay out of jail.
The incarceration rate for black males is a scandal. I’ve played there. It boggles. Blaming it on institutional racism is one angle. Staying out of gangs and in school is another.
The real leaders of the new civil rights movement are not teaching that every injustice needs redress. They are teaching the necessity of individual responsibility for the development of the black community. Williams says it: do these really mundane things and there is little chance any of us will be poor in America.

Somewhere Saul Alinsky roles in his grave as we all skate by the Arlo Guthrie idea of winning the issues from the inside.
Meanwhile, Hugo, generalizations aside, there were many southerners who jined up with the carpetbaggers and the Federalists to retake the South they lost. The Christian social responsibility of the Jim Crow laws didn’t ever end for these “birthers” who I’d also like to ask in all their “Pro Life” pridefulness what is their position on the assassinations of Kennedy, King, Kennedy, Lennon, et al?

The problem started with Moses. He gets all shook up and throws the tablets at the Golden Calf. So we picked them up and put them back together but we were never really sure if God commanded ‘thy shalt not covet thy neighbor’s ass’ or ‘cover’.

Loans don’t work. We’ve been watching that stuff fail for generations.
But, taking all this pent up social action in our society and actually day-to-day making it EASY (see “nudge”) for them go spend money at black own businesses – that will change things FAST.
I’m a marketer from early on and it sounds outlandish, but I’m not frigging kidding – turning currency into free ad space is a boon of such significance that it can “repair” the effects of slavery….
There is a HUGE percentage of our society that buys things purely on price. And without any government action, it is possible to essentially make buying from black owned businesses – like shopping at Sam’s club (always cheaper than Wal-Mart), but everywhere.
It is a combination of private giving + free marketing (normally a BIG cost of doing business) + currency theory.
Example:
Say you are a psychiatrist who feels SUPER GUILTY about racism, or at least claims to be super liberal. You can simply publish your policy of counting these “bucks” as worth 20% more in your office, and accepting bucks as 50% of your payment (dollars as the other 50%).
You just gave a 10% discount for people who use these, hell you might even get extra business from cheapskate conservatives (who want to save money) or other liberals who like use the currency for personal moral reasons.
Now you’ve got a bunch of money you need to spend at businesses that accept this currency… and in your hand you a bunch of ads for different black owned businesses that accept it – and are offering deals. Now your “big talk” philosophy has becomes “personally public policy” means you have to actually “follow through.”
Run this effectively, and in a couple years, blacks will be on par with whites in every economic category.
No government needed.

rhbee,
I appreciate your caution against overgeneralization. The southerners in my family were sticklers for the law who fought for the Union and against slavery. They came to their views via Wesleyan teaching, a reference for the Constitution (their forebears had fought in the Continental Army, another move that was generally unpopular in these parts), and their own sense of economic practicality. After the war our family was widely despised for generations as a bunch of “Southern Damn Yankees”. (It didn’t help that, while the South lay in ruins meanwhile my great grandfather returned from the fighting with a commission, a land grant and a cash award for his service.)
The plans for Reconstruction were sophisticated and sometimes visionary. They’re still worth a look, as you know, especially now that not only the Republican Party but the nation as a whole are engaged in reconstructive efforts.
As for the assassinations, the killing of Martin King is pretty much universally lamented in Atlanta. I’ve never heard so much as a smartass remark about it. I can’t speak for southern attitudes toward the Kennedy family, though obviously Texans no longer speak openly of the desirability of removing JFK through violence. As for Lennon, southerners love music and therefore him. The house bands cover his music all the time, with real affection.

Anybody see Maher last night? Jack Kingston, congressman from Georgia, tried to insist that protesters at the town halls are Democrats.
Seriously.
As Maher said in another context, “Sleep tight, batshit.”

And as the aforementioned poet Adrian Henri wrote in the mid-’60s,
“Put on our batjamas
And have a good batnight.”
Same batchannel for Maher, same bat time…
What I found muy interesante was the behavior of the two repugnats. It was milder but still the same kind of obstuctionist behavior that is marking the mobs. One can only hope for the efficacy of a backlash as those who really want to discuss the issues become aware and angered.
Yeah, rhbee. And let’s hope that the gendarmerie no longer get caught athwart. Their job is to call the shots from whichever side, to knock down disruption no matter its source, and to keep their constitutional hands clean. Granted, it’s a tricky business, but that’s why their offices are invested; it’s why they’re officers.
