Who's afraid of Rush Limbaugh?

rush-limbaugh

The Republicans voted in lockstep against the Stimulus Bill that Rush Limbaugh has been fulminating against for the last two weeks. Last week Limbaugh boasted that Obama was more afraid of him than John Boehner. The sad truth is that it’s the House Republican’s that are terrified of Limbaugh and his Brownshirts. Poor Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.), who had the temerity to take on Limbaugh was made to publicly apologize to El Rushbo. It was like a Chinese Cultural Revolution “Re-education” show Trial.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VN0CmFnnS84]

That the Republican Party is now under control of a former synthetic heroin addict who has studied the fascist discipline enforcement tactics from the 1930′s enough to turn a Georgia Congressman into a bootlicker–is a sad tale. The Party of Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt ruled by a new fuhrer is truly frightening.

Here is what’s going to happen. The moderate Republicans in the Senate are going to break ranks with the Limbaugh toadys in the House. Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Arlen Specter, Richard Lugar, George Voinivich and Charles Grassley are going to vote with the Democrats on the Stimulus Bill. In this effort they will be supported by George Will and David Brooks. This 64 vote block in the Senate will continue to support the President’s legislative agenda.

Limbaugh can continue to rule the bootlickers in the House for two more years, as they become increasingly irrelevant. If they really piss off the country, the Republican Party will be like the Whigs or the Know-Nothings in the 1850′s–completely marginalized.

Rush Limbaugh is a sad little man that is leading the Republican Party into obscurity. Kudos to President Obama.

If you didn’t read Gingrey’s comment in Politico, it’s as follows:

I mean, it’s easy if you’re Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh or even sometimes Newt Gingrich to stand back and throw bricks. You don’t have to try to do what’s best for your people and your party. You know you’re just on these talk shows and you’re living well and plus you stir up a bit of controversy and gin the base and that sort of thing. But when it comes to true leadership, not that these people couldn’t be or wouldn’t be good leaders, they’re not in that position of John Boehner or Mitch McConnell.

Now, WHERE is anything worth apologizing about? I’m frankly amazed that Gingrey caved to the typical knuckle-dragging mouth breather that called his office to complain about his “attack” on Rush. When Newt was merely a back bencher, he seemed invincible but the second he actually was put in a position of leadership, it all fell apart.

There’s a good reason WHY Rush will never run for elected office – and that’s that at some point, he’d have to make a reasoned argument in a debate over a position – something he seems incapable of.

Not being a US resident (or citizen), the whole Limbaugh thing is a mystery. Its not on our telly or radio, so help me out …
    Is it pronounced Limp-bag? or Limp-bog? or Limp-boo? or Limp-bar? or Limp-bow? or Limp-boff?

That last one would be a conversation stopper in the Home Counties!
    “Hi! I’m Rush Limp Boff”
    “Really? Then whats the rush?”

The pronunciation of Mr. Limbaugh’s name is quite counter-intuitive. Rather like gaelic, it sounds nothing like it is spelt. A rough phonetic rendering would be:

    … two beats …

Amusingly enough, the real pronunciation isn’t badly approximated by your “limp boff”: LIMB ‘BAWE. Limb as in tree limb and bawe to rhyme with the awe you feel at the sound of his voice. NOT!

Charlie Varon did a very fun one-man show called Rush Limbaugh in Night School which I caught in San Francisco in the mid 90′s.
Varon’s Limbaugh is much better than the original.

So strange to see people truly either unable to see that “the time’s they are a changin’”, or so enmeshed in their version of reality that they can’t see the real damage they do.

Perhaps some are so caught by the creature they created that they are impotent to change for fear of becoming targets of the rage they taught people to feel justified in using in place of reason.

Even as the Great Ship of State sinks slowly the Rushes and Colters will be targeting the people they charge with being responsible, and never, never see their own place in the disaster.

Oh well, read “Collapse” and just guess what resource we used up causing the collapse of the US. Hint, it might be “credit”.

A long time ago, i saw video footage of a young rush getting his ass handed to him on a platter by very angry audience members. it was really quite stunning. ah, here it is at the panopticist: http://www.panopticist.com/2006/02/a_bully_gets_bullied_why_rush_limbaugh.php

any time i get worried about rush, i go back and watch this video, and realize that in the long run there is no reason to fear him. nevertheless, he can still make trouble, kind of like the shrunken Jack Nicholson at the end of “the Witches of Eastwick” if you happened to see that film. However, I am less sanguine about the total irrelevance of the GOP. It would be nice if it happens, but it only happens if the stimulus succeeds beyond anyone’s wildest predictions. Which, given Barry Ritholz’s latest comments, http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2009/01/who-is-the-treasury-secretarys-boss/, about Geithner not yet knowing who his new boss is, still concerns me greatly.

We need to ignore these talkers on the right. They only speak to a small, and I mean small minority of Americans. Limbaugh has the largest audience and it is only a little over 6% of the country that listens to him. Hanity, Beck, and O’Reilly reach even less.

It is interesting to see that three these pontificators of opinions have not finished college. Beck never went, Hanity and Limbaugh are drop-outs. Only O’Reilly made it through.

I believe they are talking to the same people so let’s not give them the time of day. Ignore them and their very minor fringe of our population.

Instead lets talk about the rest of us and how we are going to save our country.

    Jon,
Who was it that made Gingrey publicly apologize to Rush? Could it be that he was just misquoted by Politico and wanted to clarify his statement?

This obsession with Rush is funny. The man is an entertainer, not a politician. Every time Obama mentions his name he is only helping Rush to add to his ratings and profits. Who cares whether Rush graduated from college or uses drugs? It sounds to me like y’all are just jealous because the liberal equivalent (Olberman) cannot draw nearly the audience that Rush does.

Maybe I should have read the politico article that Jon linked to a little closer. When I first read Jon’s post I thought some person or group “made” Gingrey apologize to Rush. I see now that he did so in response to the dozens of calls from angry constituents. The reason I suggested Gingrey was misquoted is because Gingrey himself says that he never told Rush to “back off” as the Politico headline claims.

I disagree with the assessment that the moderate Republican Senators will vote with the Democrats on the stimulus bill. If I was a Republican I would vote “no” on any bill that gave even a dime to ACORN. If the bill is not significantly changed I think it will get zero R votes in the senate.

Some of the similarities are disquieting, but one big similiarity that we don’t have–yet–is what Germany went through before the rise of the Nazis: A world war that killed five million German soldiers, a blockade that starved a couple million German civilians, food riots, insurrections and rebellions all over the country, a harsh treaty that took away German territory and humiliated German sovereignty, a reckless government that tried to wriggle out of reparations payments by deliberately triggering massive inflation, terrible bloodshed caused by brawling gangs of private armies such as the Stahlhelm and the Communists, that made our modern-day gangs look like gnats, a conveyor-belt of caretaker governments (partly due to a faulty constitution) which were unable to come up with real solutions to any of the nation’s problems, and then of course the Depression.

A lot has been written about the proclivity of the German mind for authority, repression, and so on. It may or may not be correct. But I doubt that Hitler and his ilk would have been able to rise to the top on popular support (even if not on popular vote) if there weren’t a lot of terribly desperate people who, by 1932, had witnessed more suffering in the previous 18 years than most people would see in half a dozen lifetimes. It’s almost a wonder that somebody like Hitler didn’t climb to the top of the pole even sooner.

So now the question is, will the American “base” go for that kind of Homeland-Uber-Alles crap simply because Rush says so?

I worry about what Blackwater is up to these days.

    Dan,

Nice run-down of the soup the Nazis fermented in. As unemployment rises watch for job-less Palinistas marching in uniforms. I’m hopeful that our wingnuts are more bark/whimper than bite, but it really depends on how hard life gets to be.

Dan and Seth, I have to wonder if there is a “rate” function to the dysfunction that results in Revolutions from the Far Right. If things get bad enough, fast enough, there are scapegoats aplenty for the demagogues to carve up, and a fairly sudden descent from the position of great apparent consumptive wealth and ease to fighting over patches of dirt to plant “victory gardens” in might be the kind of soil where those poisonous plants grow.

Thank you, NRA, for making sure there are so many guns and so much ammo in circulation. Fer shur, it’s not what the Framers had in mind, but it will give everybody a “fighting chance” in the Age of Anomie and the War of All Against All.

It may not be as much fun, but if we had a Pikes Page, then companies they owned can be blacklisted. On the other side, have a Peeps Page of execs and others who do the right thing and then we buy from them.

Think Trading Places: if you want to hurt the rich, make them poor.

Shame is definitely the weapon of choice.

Don’t look now, but Glenn Beck is coming out in favor of California “New Federalism” — with a Rebel Yell, so to speak.

I am sooo sick and tired of the media giving any attention at all to Pumpkin-Head Blow-Hard Limbaugh! The Big-Mouthed Junkie Head (remember the Vicodin addiction fiasco?). Limbaugh is the equivalent of a carnival barker, that is trying to sell the snake elixir, whilst knowing he is screwing the multitudes. He is about as intelligent and relevant as his best buddy, W (Bush). Please do not give this junkie Pumpkin-Head anymore air time, and maybe he will go away! All we can do is HOPE!!
