Green Policies and Good Jobs

with 5 comments

The University of California has just released a new study that is good news for the kind of green investment policies I think are needed in the next four years.

California’s energy-efficiency policies created nearly 1.5 million jobs from 1977 to 2007, while eliminating fewer than 25,000, according to a study to be released Monday…Much of the economic growth, the study said, was driven by both efficiency standards for large appliances like refrigerators and for residential and commercial buildings.

Maybe the conservatives who think that environmentalism will hurt the economy will read this study and shut up.

  1. I can’t believe that some people need a study in order to realize this. Countries around the world are starting to break into the green technology market with great results; why would anyone still think that it would be a bad thing?

  2. I don’t think you will find too many who do these days. There are still those quibbling the details, but it’s safe to say that most Americans are onboard with smart energy policies. Four dollar a gallon gas woke them up. Going back to sleep is the enemy now same as it was in 73 and 78.

The problem for Californians is regulating themselves out of business much as has happened in Rhode Island and out of their own comfort zone, or creating local inequities similar to those experienced when Los Angeles began to consume more of the regional water supply than they could get locally, thus starving areas with less population density so no voting clout.

There will be some hard shocks on the coast soon as the results of having to create Federal standards that levy carbon taxes on municipalities that are greedy with the grid. That will accelerate innovation but a quick application of a Federal energy policy could create gaps in coverage in California where energy consumption is high.

  3. Jon, didn’t you post that photo once before, and we don’t know where it is? What a beautiful building… I’m sending that to my pals at the Roberto Venn School of Lutherie in Phoenix. They’re building a new school in the Tempe Arts Center, and they need to see that.

Looks the same, but not quite. Certainly the same design concept.
