It is at times like this that we recall the Latin root of the word “credit” is the verb, “credere”-to trust. When 83% of the citizens feel the country is on the wrong track, there is no trust. There is no credit.
More than 8 in 10 Americans do not trust the government to do what is right, the highest ever recorded in a Times/CBS News poll. And Mr. McCain is trying to keep the White House in Republican hands at a time that President Bush’s job approval rating is at 24 percent, hovering near its historic low.
We have lost trust with the neoconservative political philosophy that has ruled our country for 30 years, (even in Clinton and Rubin’s embrace of the deregulatory , Milton Friedman economics). 83% of the people think this philosophy is screwed up and we need a change. Obama offers a clearly thought out/ bottom up philosophy of change. That’s how he fought the Democratic establishment (the Clintons and their ruling clique) and won and that’s how he can help the Congress work together to lift us up out of what is going to be a very brutal slump.
What is also clear from the new CBS/New York Times poll–that shows Barack up 53-39 over McCain–is that all of the McCain-Palin Brownshirt routine backfired big time. As Chris Buckley, Chris Hitchens and David Brooks have pointed out, they don’t want to be a member of Rush Limbaugh’s Club of angry white men and women, who don’t understand why their employers are going away to China and all the construction crews are Hispanic and they are in debt to the teats. Rush can never admit that the power of capital since the rise of Reagan has brought about unbelievable wealth for the top .01%, but is crushing what is left of the middle class.
No matter how much historical rascism may remain in our society, it is not stong enough to block the historical change that is about to happen on Nov. 4. The ruling party since 1980 (with the exception of the first two years of the Clinton Administration), The Republicans are about to lose all their control of the country’s purse strings. They had been able to control the tax and regulation portion of the government for almost 30 years. And for the benefit of their industries-finance, Drugs, oil and minerals, and most importantly the military industrial complex that has sucked Trillions out of more productive uses. And now that is ending
I believe Barack can bring us back to Credere , to the trust that will be needed if we all feel we are making sacrifices together. We don’t want to hear of any shark gaming the system like guys like Ron Perlman did in the S & L bailout.
Obama knows he is a reform President way in the same way as Teddy Roosevelt was in 1904 when he won a landslide. The changes to the FTC, FDA, the National Park System were extraordinary and rogue corporations like Rockefeller’s Standard Oil and Morgan’s Railroad Trust were brought to heel. That ushered a 20 year Progressive Era for America, culminating in the 19th Amendment that gave women the vote.
That should be the model for the next 20 years–The Second Progressive Era.
