One of the great Union voices, talks truth to his brothers and sisters.
Now THIS makes me proud to be an American.
He is awesome. Makes me proud to know that people like that still exist in America.
The United Mine Workers of America, the union where Dick Trumka started out as a PA coal miner at 19, was integrated when it was founded. In ***1890*** only 25 years after the civil war, when blacks were still being lynched by the dozens in this country.
I say this with all the love in the world: LEARN HOW TO USE THE DAMN COMMA.
This guy should run for President.
This brought me to tears – I want this message played EVERYWHERE – I’ll be passing it on!
Claudia – ditto (oh no! does that make me one
of “them”?) Very powerful.
Thank you for posting this, Jon. I was moved to tears. I will share this widely.
How refreshing to hear Richard Trumka!! It is time for our Unions to return to their best!!! It is time for the AFL-CIO to redefine its mission out of the Industry-company based negotiation into a 21st century embracing all whose labor–blue collar or White collar or non-bargaining or McJobbed– We again face a future from a position of exploitation every bit as criminal as that at the beginning of the 20th century. We have allow ourselves to be played like harps… Unions against Union, Blacks against White, Latinos, Mexicans, etc. until we have had our base reduced to a very small group that could strike and ultimately win benefits but only at the cost of turning on newest, youngest members, at the cost of reducing membership and workforce.
We not only need the type of changes that are articulated by Obama, but we need to again embrace each other and insist that we rise or fall together as a nation. My Grandfather, a farmer, lectured us that we may not be Union members or pay dues, but without the strength of Unions and their pressing and forwarding the rights and protection of workers… noone, nobody would have either a pot to pee into or a window to throw it out of. He saw that the Unions supported all non-bargaining peoples as well. Long live Richard!!!
