This just in: fact checker gives accusation of Palin’s banning of books a half true. The fact checker found a reporter who covered the original story of the Palin’s attempt to fire a librarian for not removing certain books. It’s a half true because the reporter had difficulty remembering the exact titles.
“Palin, while she was mayor of Wasilla tried to fire the city librarian because the librarian refused to remove some of the books that Sarah wanted removed. The librarian has declined to talk about the whole incident. We did find a reporter who had covered this and he confirmed it to a point that he even gave us the titles to some books that Palin sought to have banned.”
One of these was called Pastor, I’m gay
“We did find a reporter who had covered this and he confirmed it to a point that he even gave us the titles to some books that Palin sought to have banned.”
So how is this a half-truth, again?
“It’s a half true because the reporter had difficulty remembering the exact titles.”
“The librarian has declined to talk about the whole incident.”
If the librarin declined to talk, how do we know that s/he couldn’t remember exact titles?
That link brought me to a non-specific page.
Dan, try this one.
In the NYTimes
“But in 1995, Ms. Palin, then a city councilwoman, told colleagues that she had noticed the book “Daddy’s Roommate” on the shelves and that it did not belong there, according to Ms. Chase and Mr. Stein. Ms. Chase read the book, which helps children understand homosexuality, and said it was inoffensive; she suggested that Ms. Palin read it.
“Sarah said she didn’t need to read that stuff,” Ms. Chase said. “It was disturbing that someone would be willing to remove a book from the library and she didn’t even read it.””
Yeay, yeah, yeah. So’s you’re old man, and so am I a broken frickin’ rekkid, but the extraordinarily gifted and unusually busy Mr. Damon should discipline himself — in the manner of the best, most mannered of naturalistic actors — to avoid indulging in “The Big Stupid on Shit About Which He Cannot Know a Thing (Though he once played one on television)”.
[Editor’s Note: Apologies to Carrie Snodgrass the estimable.]
zak, I wasn’t referring to you at all in my immediately foregoing exasperation, but why — WHY? — have you thrown your really much, much brainpower against Ms. Palin?
Lay off the crack, Hugo…
There are a lot of people here discussing Palin, since Jon throws out some Palin chum to start with. So I’m not sure why MY commentary bothers you so much.
Salon also just published a piece on the book censorship issue
I should note that the above piece also includes some heresay about her creationist leanings.
From the article:
” Another valley activist, Philip Munger, says that Palin also helped push the evangelical drive to take over the Mat-Su Borough school board. “She wanted to get people who believed in creationism on the board,” said Munger, a music composer and teacher. “I bumped into her once after my band played at a graduation ceremony at the Assembly of God. I said, ‘Sarah, how can you believe in creationism — your father’s a science teacher.’ And she said, ‘We don’t have to agree on everything.’
“I pushed her on the earth’s creation, whether it was really less than 7,000 years old and whether dinosaurs and humans walked the earth at the same time. And she said yes, she’d seen images somewhere of dinosaur fossils with human footprints in them.”
Munger also asked Palin if she truly believed in the End of Days, the doomsday scenario when the Messiah will return. “She looked in my eyes and said, ‘Yes, I think I will see Jesus come back to earth in my lifetime.'”
Dan, sorry, was out. The above link is from a radio program: OnTheMedia, aired Sunday, transcript up at that link Monday. By then there’ll be 10 better sources anyway. but you can listen to the audio if so inclined.
Damon is trying to make a point but he comes across as a one dimensional sexist.
He calls Palin a “hockey mom”—asking if she can face down Russia—if she believes dinosaurs exists because she’s gonna have the nuclear codes/etc.
Its so disrespectful to her intelligence level and evidently she is bright enough to be in the position she currently occupies!!
Matt is reacting from a totally non-researched dumb ass sexist viewpoint about Palin rather than commenting on her actual political background/credentials/etc.
He should really stick to Bourne identity and leave politics to those who are better informed.
Celebrity comments like that are annoying, distracting and destructive because they are highly influential to susceptible minds whilt the truth is that they are based simply on someone’s tacky knee-jerk reactions.
His crass comments then whizz around the world whilst taking attention from real political facts and figures!
Let’s make this election be about actual politics and some silly pantomine based on race, sexism, etc.
Let’s just stick to actual political facts and leave the childish celebrity comments for the big screen instead!
Let’s make this election be about actual politics and NOT some silly pantomine based on race, sexism, etc.
She didn’t seek to ban books. Asking about something does not equate to actually intending to. It’s a leftist lie.
She does believe in dinosaurs, and they didn’t roam the earth millions of years ago like the faulty carbon dating theorists tend to believe.
Matt Damon’s opinion is no more valid than my demented and afflicted retarded neighbor’s…and only half as impressive.
McCain is NOT 4 more years of Bush. He’s riding their coattails to get in good with the GOP, wait and see how much he throws them off when elected.
Wait and see.
The reason, Hugo, that people are talking about Sarah Palin so much is that the McCain administration has been blasting her name and whipping the crowds up into an orgiastic fury of exaltation over her.
Greg, my questions were, if a reporter could name a title that Palin wanted out, how was it a half-truth? And if the librarian refused to speak about the incident, how do we know that she couldn’t remember any of the titles?
Depending on what angle you’re coming from (I’m not sure) I could add another one: What if it came out that Joe Biden had moved to have books on creationism banned from libraries in his district?
As far as Damon speaking out, I agree that in general, it’s best for celebrities to stay out of politics, including Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Charlton Heston, Ted Nugent, and every C&W singer.
Short of that, it’s best if a celebrity avoids labelling people who disagree with him as morons or traitors and simply states his opinions plainly and straightforwardly.
Why should celebrities stay out of politics and everybody else stay in? If they choose to use their bully pulpits, no problem. You are free to pay attention or not.
“All we are saying is give peace a chance…”
asareadjei, I believe you called “sexist” first.
As to Palin’s experience, I believe Damon is right: she has none whatsoever, and I would avoid playing the gender card on Palin’s behalf. It didn’t work for Clinton, either.
bill, she sought to have books removed from the Wasilla city library whose titles she disagreed with. When the librarian refused, she sought to have her fired.
Dan, the fact checker stated it that the librarian would not speak, BUT, the reporter who covered the case initially, would speak. He confirmed everything, but could not solidly (to the fact checker’s satisfaction) confirm the titles of the books. Later on, they determined one of the titles was Pastor, I’m gay. The reporter confirmed this title.
The Wasilla library incident is important only because it shows the authoritarian/inquisational/Stalinistic side of Palin — ‘if someone or something has a point with which she disagrees, that someone or something must be made to disappear.’
I wonder if the Secret Service has ever employed tasters before. McCain may need one.
If he wins. We can avoid the whole taster employment issue simply by voting Obama.
zak, I agree with yr inside-baseball observations of the ins&outs of the last remaining exercises — possibly here, and now — of actual, artifactual American journalism (sure it’s in the timing, among other things), but if you don’t get how insanely hypocritical and misogynistically downright gleeful is the Democratic Party’s instant hatred of all-things-Palin-including-her-ovaries-and-those-of-all-her-daughters-born-and-ever-to-be-born, then bigod zak you just continue to astound me and probably ever will do.
Moreover, that probably makes me the ass.
