Don't You Love You Tube?

When I first started writing about User Generated Content three years ago, I was not quite clear where it all was heading. But when I see ads like this, generated from a home computer and uploaded to You Tube, I think I know one element of American life that will be changed by bottom-up media–Politics.

I completely agree, both with the ad and your post.

What’s amazing is that instead of embracing the new user-content model of today, candidates like McCain are instead pushing old-world tactics, like smear campaigns. Anybody in with the new is relatively immune from the old, at least in this case.

Boo to Bush. Boo to McCain.

The Egyptian Pharaohs maintained control over their populace because they had a monopoly on reading and writing — the technologies of communication at the time.

The Catholic Church maintained control because they had a monopoly on Latin — the language of art, science, and religion.

Over the last 50 years, our modern pharaohs maintained control because they had a monopoly on the use of television and mass media.

They’ve lost that monopoly. It will be interesting to see if they can still retain control.

That ad is awful, move on moveon’ers. I don’t like Bush as much as the next guy, but wow that sucked and only hurts your case. Why do political ads preach to the choir? You think a conservative is going to look at that and be… “Wow, I really hate that guy now… he ate cake!”. Obama fanbois don’t look at the McCain ads and say “Wow… Paris Hilton is so lame, I hate that guy!”

So Obama hasn’t eaten cake for the past 7 years? Because last time I checked soldiers are still dying so we all are warmongering cake-eaters.

Katrina??? Really?? If we beat that horse any more it will look like McCain’s neck growth. Give me a break with the Bush blaming, that gets you nowhere fast and the “right” automatically goes into a hissy. I’m going to make a blame Ray Nagan ad and then… wait that’s been done too!! Listen If you really think Bush is personally responsible for stocking your local superdome then why do you bother electing a mayor, as well as a govenor who are supposed to take care of their local community? We might as well just erase all borders and be the United State of America.

Over the last 50 years, our modern pharaohs maintained control because they had a monopoly on the use of television and mass media.

This logic is flawed. Besides Fox, it is exactly the complete opposite and on the other side of the aisle. Actually your statement should start with “50 years ago, our modern pharaohs”.

And yet some national polls have McCain leading Obama by several points now. . . I know only state polls matter, but that McCain is a viable candidate despite the last 8 years and his voting record, disturbing.

Not really, Zak. The left has been shouting inside the echo chamber instead of spending time in the heartland listening and doing.

Fear of change trumps hope for change. This isn’t a blame game. It’s a drive for votes.

Putin handed the right the exact card at the exact moment they needed it. I doubt that was intentional but I’m not THAT paranoid. Obama goes on vacation. Bad image. Obama sailed across his own spinnaker in Europe. Between the Big Moment Ops and the Press Salivating, he began to lose that good guy, aw shucks, image that was his wind. He tried to act like a President without being one. That seal debacle was semiotic kitsch with all the appeal of a pink plastic flamingo on the lawn.

The pundits underrate the Rev Wright and Pfleger effects. It isn’t racism. It provoked fear. His supporters keep calling people racists and that reinforces the fear. The technical term is negative emotional vectoring. The emotional attractors create unstable orbits and the dominant attractor will win. In this case, fear of the source trumps change by the source.

Exoticism doesn’t sell potatoes as a commodity; only as an onion fry. Meanwhile the Big O declined the town halls and tripped on his tongue at Saddleback.

Any communication professional and games theorist can tell you the first rule of tit for tat is Be Clear. Then and only then, Be Provokable. His timing on issues is terrible and he is only hearing what he wants to hear. So now he has a bad act.

    Que lastima.

There is time to recover. He has to decide and be very clear about what **he** values most. And he has to say it in short sentences without appearing to be jingoistic. It might be time to get someone else who isn’t a 26 year old to write some of his speeches.

DON’T go after McCain’s service record. DON’T let his surrogates do it. It’s a third rail. People need heros. Go after the economy. Tell people that as soon as you are in office in JANUARY (think cold cold Chicago and Milwaukee) your first act on the first day will be getting fuel oil out to those people who will really be needing it. AND mean it!
