I am well aware that the primary mission of the News Business is to sell advertising in order to stay in business. I am also aware that the last 8 months have been a bonanza in terms of viewer/reader attention to the political scene. But now, in the interest of keeping these political junkies transfixed, the press is going overboard to make it look like this is going to be the tighest Presidential race in history. Let’s get real. Start with this little tidbit from the latest Washington Post/ABC Poll.
Do you think things in this country (are generally going in the right direction) or do you feel things (have gotten pretty seriously off on the wrong track)?Right Wrong No direction track opinion 6/15/08 14 84 2
Can you seriously name any other issue that 84% of Americans can agree on? I dare you.
So today the Washington Post wrote their lead article on this poll in which they show Obama leading McCain 48-42. But they lead the article with this headline-“Poll finds Independant Voters Split Between McCain and Obama”. It is not until the 6th paragraph that they mention that Obama leads McCain by 6 points in the poll. Talk about burying the lede.
Chris Matthews went all out last week citing how Obama was having trouble with women from the NBC Poll, when in fact the poll showed Obama was leading McCain with women by 16 points!
This is a once in a generation “Throw the Bums out election”. I know the networks have to “put butts in seats”, but at least they should try to be a bit honest about their efforts to gin up a horse race.
