Steve Clemons says that Dick Cheney and the remaining Neo-cons in his office are fighting a rear guard action to attack Iran. The moderates like Gates and Rice seem to be losing internal battles.
Whereas David Wurmserallegedly (though he does deny it) said that Vice President Cheney felt it important to “tie the President’s hands” when it came to Iran and to generate an event that would undermine the diplomatic track — the worry now is that the crowd in power is really talking about tying the next President’s hands. . .tying perhaps Barack Obama’s hands.
This really could be cooking — and I think it’s important for White House watchers to realize that the folks we thought had knocked back the neocons are themselves losing leverage again.
Clemons is right. Barack ought to bring this issue to the attention of the American public. Historians can recall that the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba was approved by Eisenhower and Nixon. When Kennedy was briefed on it by the CIA in his first week of office, he was told that there were too many Cubans already trained and ready to go to stop the plans. And besides, as soon as the Invasion started the Cubans would rise up, overthrow Castro and greet the invaders with joy.
As I pointed out last week, there is considerable speculation that Bush gave the greenlight to the Israelis to bomb Iran, thus provoking a fight that would inevitably bring us into an all out regional war. As I also pointed out, it would push oil to $200 a barrel and bring on a World Wide recession.
