Senators Mitch McConnell and James Inhoffe think they won in their battle to stall Climate Change legislation this week. Inhoffe stated, “Now Democrats are on record as supporting legislation that would significantly increase prices at the pump and in our homes.” Rachel Dixon pointed me to an Australian journalist who made this comment on the politicians being slower than the business leaders to understand the importance of change.
The moves by Ford, General Motors, Toyota, British Airways, American Airlines, Dow Chemical and now United Airlines to start radically reshaping their businesses to accommodate permanently high oil prices makes a mockery of the antics of Kevin Rudd and the Opposition.
I think the same is true in the U.S. General Electric’s Jeff Immelt is so far ahead of George Bush on this issue, it’s a joke. In fact, I think the Republicans have now handed the environmental issue to the Democrats in the fall election. The Dems will say the Republicans have their head in the sand on this critical issue and point to this week as proof.
